  • Gas Tank

Was just told I need a new gas tank. I was at a small country gas station , while gas was pumping I went into store. When I came back outside gas was rocketing out of the filler with pump still pumping away. Well now I keep getting check engine lights and it won't pass inspection. Ran codes and said something about fuel system, etc. Had a mechanic look at it and he said the baffles inside tank much be messed up. Is this a thing or just smoke blowing up my??? He said a replacement tank is $800 but none to be found. I've looked online and can't find any for sale. What do you all think??

Odd for that year to do that.
I would find another mechanic. That one doesn't sound like he knows Jeeps.

Sounds like the pump at the gas station was some of the problem. Not sure about the codes.

I agree with the others, see if it does it again first.

If it's throwing codes, something must have got messed up, maybe it needs to be reset? Jeep's are known for spitting out fuel, but not like that, could have been a bad pump? Last year I replaced my fuel filler hose with a GM model that has the baffle built into it, since then I've never had fuel spill out when filling up.

97-02 didn't have the fuel spillage issues due to different design in emissions.

My 2000 TJ has never had that issue at a pump.

Kinda seems like hit or miss at times, I know people with JK's that spit fuel out too.

My 99 TJ doesn't have that issue either.

Ok, my Tacoma spit out fuel once too, it was the pump pressure that caused it.

The same thing happened to me on my 2016 ford and it was the pump.

It's possible you overfilled with such force it pushed some fuel into the vapor canister and it's reading a code??? Might check that.
                              What is the code itself?
