  • DD TJ Shock advice

Hey everybody. Longtime lurker here coming out of hiding for help.

I'm looking for advice on shocks for my DD TJ. I don't wheel any (at least not so far) and the suspension is stock, no lift with no serious plans to do so in the immediate future. I just replaced the stock sized tires with 31s and I can tell the shocks are way overdue. I'm wanting a reasonably comfortable ride but I know this is a jeep of course so, all things being relative I know it's only going to get so good. It just feels a bit bouncy and wallow-y and I have no idea how old the existing shocks are, having bought the Jeep a couple of years ago. For all I know these are the factory shocks (170K miles on the clock).

With that in mind, I think I've narrowed things down to either Bilstein HD (yellow) or 5100s of the 0 to 2" lift variety. Do you guys have any thoughts on either of these two? I'd like as comfortable a ride as possible but would also like as much of a controlled experience as I can get. I drove a 1st gen miata for 20 years so I'm not requiring or expecting a cadillac ride by any means. I'm just wavering a bit on which of these two to go with. I've read that the HD are stiffer than 5100s. As well, would I need to do any adjustments to bump stops if I went with 5100 vs the HDs since they are rated for up to a 2 inch lift? Or, if anyone has any alternate recommendations for something in the same price range, I'd be all ears.

Thanks so much for any advice!

I run the Bilstein 5100s on my and they ride great on the street and the trail. I can highly recommend those.

The $19 Monroe shocks from Orielly's. I've run them on almost everything. Nice smooth ride and when you break one wheeling. Lifetime warranty. At least for a few. My Orielly's won't warranty mine anymore but at $19 it's not a big loss.

I run Rancho 9000XL on my TJ. Good ride and good wheeling but expensive to replace if you tear one up
        Other choice would be Bilstiens

The HD's are for big heavy vehicles.
I run 5100's on my Dodge and love em. I run MX's on my TJ and really like the adjustability.
Just put Skyjacker's on the XJ and they ride nice.

Thanks for the input everybody. I think it's gonna be the 5100s. I want something quality but the Ranchos are just a little over budget. I appreciate the advice!

I might have my stock shocks from my TJ. Probably 10-15k miles on them. Free if I can find them.

Free would be awesome! I would be more than happy to take those off your hands if you can find them.

                Let me know!

                Thanks

DoetchTech is a great shock that almost nobody thinks about. But I'm all about cheap Monroes. :)

Well I ended up taking Ross up on his offer of his lightly used factory shocks. Hard to beat free and they ride a lot better than the worn out units I had on there. Thanks for the input everybody.
